Have honestly never heard it in my entire life.
But even the club used to issue merchandise with "the hammers" on.
Weird.

Other clubs fans say Hammers..as in if im asked who i support..ill always say west ham...because i know most non WH wouldnt get it if said 'the Irons'.
And they always say something like..A Hammer eh'...or 'happy Hammer'
I always 'The Irons' in WHU company.

Pd, I've heard "tv" type arsenal fans refer to the tram as the gunners. Everton usually refer to themselves as blues or each other as evertonians, man utd just reds. Just my experience of course.

When ever im asked who i support and i say West Ham, the response is usually, "Ah, the Hammers"
Mind you i never refer to myself as a Hammers fan, its always just West Ham, and TBH dont recall having heard another (English) West Ham fan refer to themselves as a Hammer either.
The Aussie ones do sometimes though, you get, "Yeah, im a Hammers fan too" then they often go on the ask stupid questions like when did we last win the Cup? or Sams doing a great job, or how great to sign that Andy whats his name, has the league started yet?.

Bit of a crossroads at the moment mate, working in Singapore for SMRT, good position, 5 days a week, would be good dough anywhere else in the world. Paying more for a one bedroom condo that my ex boss pays for a 6 bedroom 3 story , ambassadors style residence in Penang. Good to be back in a civilized well organised country, but after 13 years of being in countries Ive worked in its a little bit soulless
Been offered a 4 year contract in Malaysia ,Klang valley. Starts in October. Not got a contract offer yet but money will be about the same but the cost of living is far , far lower. Bit of a quandary about what to do , but I think at my age Ive got to go for whats going to make me more money , no state pension or fuck all when I become an old(er) cunt

I use both. If anyone asks which team I support, I could say, 'I'm a Hammer.'
We are known as The Hammers and/or The Irons and I've heard both around the ground.

I've shouted 'c'mon you hammers' at a few games with hundred others, IRONS sounds better though. I always think of Billy Mitchell when people say "I'm a Hammer" no one else says that. It's like west ham fans that do the crossed hammers with their arms they always look a bit slow when they do it.

But "hammers" does seem to be more the media's name for us than our own, if that makes sense.
